Meet Wellson, a vibrant 5-year-old living with a GRIA3 genetic mutation whose journey has been defined by incredible resilience and hard-won milestones. Though he faced significant early global delays—sitting up at 18 months and crawling until age three—Wellson has made rapid progress and is now fully able to walk, run, and even ride a scooter.
While he manages absence seizures, the introduction of seizure medication has helped his speech blossom into three-word sentences like “I love you,” and he is a bright student who knows his colors and counts to ten. These successes exist alongside significant challenges, including sleep issues that can keep him awake for 24 hours and intense behavioral struggles where he feels emotions at an extreme scale.
Despite navigating sensory issues and the need for constant physical, occupational, and behavioral therapy, Wellson’s personality shines through in his love for school and his obsession with the movie Cars. For our family, receiving a genetic diagnosis provided the “true answers” we needed, and while his journey is rare, we feel blessed to share his huge milestones with a community that understands the beauty in every step forward.
