On June 6, 2024, we opened up our GRI Genes Research Roundtable to the public.
New research shows that radiprodil — a molecule being trialed in patients for Gain-of-Function GRIN Disorders — was effective at reducing seizures in mice with GRIN2A variants. Dr. Bertocchi (University of Torino, Neuroscience Institute-Cavalieri-Ottolenghi Foundation (NICO)) presented her lab’s work on the effects of radiprodil on seizures in mice. The results showed that radiprodil reduced the onset and intensity of audiogenic seizures (seizures involving a stimulus from sound). To learn more about her team’s work, check out their latest research paper: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38529699/.
There is currently a clinical trial with GRIN Therapeutics (called the Honeycomb Study) studying radiprodil in GRIN patients with a gain-of-function (GoF) variant in GRIN1, GRIN2A, GRIN2B, or GRIN2D. Learn more about the Honeycomb Study here!
Another study reveals GRIN2B mice, with variant C456Y, displayed hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli including mechanical, thermal, and electrical stimuli. Heera Moon (Department of Biological Sciences, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Tech) presented her work in Dr. Eunjoon Kim’s lab which focuses on sensory changes and effects on the brain in these GRIN2B mice. The mice had more connections in a region of the brain called the anterior cingulate cortex. HUGE thanks to Jade Broome, (GRIK2) mom, for presenting the family story of Amarli.
The purpose of this roundtable is to bring together scientists and clinicians from around the world to discuss the latest GRI research and promote collaboration. Get updates from CureGRIN, hear a family share their story, and learn about cutting edge research from the scientific community. Join us at our next GRI Genes Research Roundtable on August 1! Link to join will be shared on our Facebook page August 1.
