Danica

Danica is my granddaughter. She just turned five years young. So sweet. My first grandchild.

I fell in love with her the minute she was born. Our family knew something wasn’t right when she could not lift up her head. Danica started therapy when she was about 9 months old. That’s also when we got the diagnosis of GRIN1.  We found out GRIN1 affects her intellect and memory. Also, along with that, is hypotonia.

Every day is a new challenge, but she is getting stronger. I know someday she will walk.  Physically she could, but mentally she hasn’t realized it yet. But she will. She isn’t speaking many words, just mama, no, and a lot of sounds. She giggles and cries for no reason. When she is tired she throws a tantrum, but she knows what she wants.

Danica loves to swim and can almost take a breath on her own in the water. She also just got a new walker. Her parents take walks with her every evening. She wears out her shoes because she drags her left foot when she walks. There is an intensive therapy place near where we live and we signed Danica up to be on the waiting list. It will be 3 weeks for 2 hours a day for $4,500.00. My husband and I agreed to pay for it. We feel we need to give her the best opportunity. Grandparents Rock!!!

CureGRIN Stories

Andrew

Andrew’s nurse noticed an “unresponsive episode” in which he momentarily stopped breathing. We would later go on to realize that the episode in question was probably the first of many seizures he would experience.
