Our sweet little guy came into our lives at three and a half years old through adoption.

We were foster parents at the time when our agency called us asking if we would adopt a little guy with autism, and about a week later we met Paulie!

Sparing the details, it took 4 years until we knew that Paul had GRIA4.

My husband and I direct a weeklong respite camp for special needs individuals and 2 years ago had a little guy with Angelman syndrome come to camp. After watching him throughout the week I was all but convinced that Paul had Angelman syndrome as well and asked his doctor to have him tested. When the test results came back negative for Angelman syndrome, broader genetic testing was run and we received a call that Paul had GRIA4.

We are extremely new to this diagnosis and have a lot to learn. We are excited to be attending the GRICON next month in Boston and hope to glean information from presenters and other GRI families in order to help Paul have the best life possible.

Paul is a happy camper most of the time and his play reflects that of an 18 month old. His favorite toys
make noise and he loves to play with stacking cups. Paul has pica and always needs something available
that is safe to chew on. He is in diapers and only self feeds with his hands. He has great trunk support
(sits well on his own) but has an unsteady gate and needs assistance with walking safely. Paul loves to be
outside, loves to swim (float in a lifejacket) and loves taking baths. Paul enjoys life with 7 siblings who
love him and help keep him happy and safe.

CureGRIN Stories

Zachariah

The diagnosis of GRIN gave us opportunity to reach out and we found our “new family”, a collection of families from all over the world living the same experience. Zach found his genetic Twin and even met him in 2019. We shared experiences, stories, nightmares. We were surprised at the range and degrees of physical and intellectual disabilities across the other Grin kids and Hopeful that one day Zach could do some of these things.
