Rowan

Rowan is our 4 year old Bee. He is so happy, lovable, and just happy go lucky all the time. Never forgets a face. Every time he walks into a room, he lights that room up!

We learned Rowan had GRIN2B at the age of 1 1/2. I knew something wasn’t right at 6 months when he wasn’t meeting milestones. At the age of one, he still couldn’t crawl, he couldn’t eat solid foods and would choke on food. He started having absence seizures that we didn’t know were seizures. We thought he was having allergic reactions. His face would turn blotchy, he would stare in space and it would last for about a minute. He would become lethargic after the seizure and sleep for 4+ hours after. After being told by our hospital he was coming down with a virus, we knew better and went to his pediatrician right away, who then ordered an eeg, and that’s when we knew he was having seizures as the eeg showed seizure activity.

We then went for genetic testing and that’s when we got our final diagnosis and began traveling to Nortons doing counseling, seeing a sleep specialist, and a neurologist. Everything seemed like a blur, and we asked why us? But Rowan doesn’t care nor understand, he is just our happy boy!

He has made many strides. We have been in OT, PT, and Speech since he was one, and without headstart and his therapist, and everyone that has been involved with Rowan we couldn’t have made it this far! He does have a delay, and is non verbal for the most part, but we have an amazing team! I’m so proud of our boy, and so happy to share his story anytime I get the chance!

CureGRIN Stories

Zachariah

The diagnosis of GRIN gave us opportunity to reach out and we found our “new family”, a collection of families from all over the world living the same experience. Zach found his genetic Twin and even met him in 2019. We shared experiences, stories, nightmares. We were surprised at the range and degrees of physical and intellectual disabilities across the other Grin kids and Hopeful that one day Zach could do some of these things.
